Peasant on Guard

Reaper calls him a rioting peasant but he doesn't look like he rioting... he looks like he's just standing around waiting.  He holds a torch and a pitchfork which says to me he must be standing guard on a dark night.

Another possibility is that his wife thought she heard a noise in the the yard and he is showing her there is no giant spider out there...

or is there?
