Things From The Basement New England Village

These were Christmas gifts from my Mother-in-law and wife. Things from the Basement kits are awesome. 

The Hartwell Tavern kit is great an excellent reproduction of the original.

I like the detail of the cellar door.

These are two generic colonial houses. 

Less detailed than the Hartwell Tavern but still very nice looking.

Rear view of the same houses the color choice was difficult.

This is the captain Smith House which I painted last year it's got an extra level of detail and that I really like.  

All together they make a nice little New England village... A few barns and other additions.

This is based on a historic house that is part of Minuteman National Park.

It's available in both 15mm (the one I am showing) and a somewhat more detailed 28mm version.

It's a lovely piece and I hope they will make more 15mm colonial pieces.

Generous Gift

The other night I was running a test game in preparation for the Let's Roll Game "Day" this weekend. One of my players Will Hunter made a comment about getting me the Terrors of the Deep Set for an Xmas gift.  I, thinking he was joking, said I would rather get the Scenery pack.  Well two days later it showed up at my door.  Apparently Will wanted to thank me for running line games during the pandemic. This was utterly unnecessary as I ran the games as much for myself as for anyone else. That said it was a very generous thing to do and I shall have to think on how to return the favor. 

The is a very nice addition to my collection.  I briefly considered modifying the Martello tower to detach the batteries around the base.  In the end I decided not do this. 

I look forward to getting them painted up and putting them on the table. 

Black Seas shore terrain and wreak markers

 

More goodies from Arofan some 1/700 scale buildings, a couple of Martolo towers and some wreak markers.

Three small buildings and a church.

These will work nicely for Caribbean towns of a Mediterranean. 

Martolo towers for shore defense I have a bigger one but these are excellent additions to my collection.

Last of all is a 3D print of HMS Leopard that wasn't quite the right size.

She's the right length but too small in the beam and too short.

Well I decided I would use that lemon into lemonade.

I made a pair of wreak markers out of out of scale ship.

Challenge X Entry #11 Naval Fortifications

AdamC: Awdry's Atoll Naval Fortifications (40 Points)

For Awdry's Atoll I decided I would build a Martello tower the first level is the required CD the Second an old coaster I was given by work (What does one do with a single coaster? I mean other than make terrain) then I couple of layers of Reaper's plastic bases I got from a kickstarter. 

The Tower is made from the tube scavenged from an old tinfoil box, cut to an appropriate size.

I made a cannon for the roof with a some bits, a balsa wood door, and gun ports made of card and of course a flag staff.

She looks quite right terms of scale and should be tough nut for any attacking naval force.

Next up is a small fort put together with scraps of balsa wood and some putty. 

I got the scale wrong for a true harbour fort in Black Seas but even in 1/700 scale she'll do for small fortification like Fort Montague.

It will serve very well with 1/2400 scale ships. Taken together these pieces fill just under half of a 6 inch cube so I will call it 9 points, pulse 1 point for the flag equalling 10 points for the models. (I can provide dimensions if needed) 

The Atoll adds another 30 to the total for 40 points all in all. I'll need to call on the good Lady Sarah's balloon.

Great scratch-builds Adam. And very useful terrain for Black Seas, etc. I'll go with your suggested points for these.

Small trerrain project.

This past weekend my wife and I went searching out yard sales.  Its something we both enjoy doing when we have a spare weekend and every once and a while you find a nice gem.  This weekend I found a door mat in great shape and it was in the "free pile" so I grabbed it enduring my wife's eye rolling at my reason.

I cut it up during Evelyn nap on Sunday and now I have all the fields I'll need for 15mm games.  In a pinch they could work with 28mm figures though they would be little low for that.  Most folks use a straight yellow brown mat but I think this multi color mats are great for fields.

Reaper Bones Stone Circle

I've been too busy to do much painting or posting of late but I finally got this the excellent terrain piece from the Bones III kick starter.

Stone circles have an aura of mystery and magic about them as such they are prefect for Frostgrave though I opted to no do this one in snow.

I want to use it other setting especially Saga I'm planning to hit it with a little more dry brushing and maybe a bit of a wash

Still I feel its table ready just noticing some room for improvement.   I'm thinking the stones might see the table this Thursday if John and I can meet up for a game (we are planning to but my life is currently fairly unpredictable).

WIP Tower Roof 2

After Yesterday's post I got some really good advice form Mike Paine and AJ Wright and the roof looks much improved I think this project is ready for priming and paint.

WIP: Tower Roof

I built a rough frame then added some cardboard for an old miniatures box

Then it was time to add some shingles to the roof.  I'm not much of  roofer but I think the effect is OK... I was thinking I might add a second layer so I can get the over lap of true shingles but I might also consider this ready for paint.  Any thoughts?

Terrain Work in progress

Not much new painting because I am working on some X-mass gifts. 

With encouragement form some of my readers this project is a restarted

Its starting to come together though you can see pieces keep falling out.. hopefully I will be able to get them settled down.

Now its a matter of working out the roof.

The tower is also coming along coming along

You can see how it stacks up and I am working on putting on a top of some sort.

Thrift Store Argonath

So here in the USA the day after Thanksgiving is know as Black Friday it's an insane day of shopping bargains and retail chaos.  I normally stay home I just don't like the crowds and madness of shopping on that particular day.  My Wife and I had agreed that Friday would be our day to relax and take it easy but by 12:30 she was getting antsy and wanted to go out.  Its a tribute to my love for her that I went shopping with her on a Black Friday.  It was a successful trips the stores were busy but not maddeningly so and we got several people checked off the Xmas list and/or got some bargains for ourselves.

One of the stops we had to make was at a thrift store called "SAVERS" we have a birthday party for the daughter of one of Ari's bridesmaids and the family had requested donations of baby cloths and items for a local charity.  We figured we could probably get more bang for our buck there.  In any event we were walking through the furniture section when a box caught my eye.  A set of "bookends" in an iconic shape recognizable to any fantasy literature/movie  fan.

 Tolkien's Argonath  and they where only $5.99 I said to my wife those would be good for a wargaming project, she looked at me a little amused and said "Yeah they would get them if you want them."  Obviously I did.  I did a little looking around this morning on line and found these are available on Ebay if you want them but the price is considerably higher.

 The pieces are solidly built, the hands and necks look a little fragile and sadly the box they came in will not work for storage but I think they should hold up pretty well. They will look great on a Frostgrave table and might be useful of Dragon Rampant as well.

I was pleased to see the rear of the piece was as detailed as the front so often this sort of item the rear is flat or worse covered with copyright information. I haven't decided if these need paint or not.  I might do a little maybe dry brush the crowns in gold like it was once covered in gold leaf that has worn away.  A light dry brush in light gray might bring out the texture in the stone or I may use them as is. Anyone want to weigh in on this one?  I would be glad of any suggestions.
