"The fog was incredibly thick that night. We were in the combat zone, but even so, we were forced to open our formation, reduce speed, and occasionally use our horn. there were several near misses with destroyers running across the bows of us or our battleship escorts. As dawn broke, the fog began to burn off. That's when the first shots rang out. Our destroyers ahead were firing at something we still could not see. General Quarters sounded as panicked messages came fast over the TBS radio. "Enemy spotted!!" Then the Big E broke through the fog, though we wished we hadn't. An enemy task force, apparently just as surprised as we were, was arrayed before us. "Pilots, man your planes!" -Scenario by Frank Shepherd
The fleets are deployed almost on top of each other its like a a gunfight in swimming pool or maybe a bathtub. I have two squadrons of "older"(early/mid 30s) destroyers and 4 Treaty Cruisers two New Orleans, and one Northampton following the Portland. Arofan has the Fletcher class Destroyers at the top of the page and the Battle Wagons to the right Mark has the Light Cruisers and Enterprise.
My Destroyers surge forward targeting the Japanese light cruisers leading their Destroyer squadrons when possible and heavy Cruisers or destroyers when I cannot. We bast on light Cruiser and a destroyer out of the water with torpedo's and a lucky gun criticle.
I lose 4 destroyers and Arofan loses one. A combination of Torpedoes and Gunfire sinks a Japanese heavy cruiser. USS Portland take moderate damage in a gun battle with a pair of Kongo class Battle Cruisers. Portland and Washington land hits on them in return. My other cruisers have landed hits on two other Japanese Light cruisers which are still operational but hurting. Another Japanese Heavy Cruisers was heavily damage. The momentum was on the US side but lot of ships have only been moderately engaged so far.. unfortunately play had been slow so we had to wrap before the game was decided, Still a fun game and an interesting scenario.
