So I got a response form WarGames illustrated via their facebook page were I posed my story (only fair to give them a chance to respond)
"We are loud and proud wargamers here at WI too.
Barry
Hilton’s column certainly seems to have got people talking, which is
great, that’s what we wanted our column pieces to do. They are designed
as light-hearted quick reads that voice AN option, in this case the
opinion of (very experienced) wargamer Barry Hilton, next month it’s
the turn of Alessio Cavatore, then Pete Brown, then back to Barry.
Since
we published the “Worse than Porn?” piece I have spoken to numerous
gamers who have said, “I’m not at all ashamed, what’s he talking
about?”, and I’ve spoken to others who have said “I’m glad Barry has
mentioned that, I thought it was just me!”.
I
hope our column pieces will continue to provoke reaction, and get
readers thinking, talking, and most importantly, keep them entertained.

Just the sort of middle of the road lets not offend either side sort of response I expect from an editor (and to be fair I don't think they could have given any other kind). Still I am glad to have gotten it. I also asked them if they would post the article on line... to this they refused(an odd choice when they claim promoting discussion is one of their goals) I don't like to criticize a piece writing without giving you the chance to read it your self but its out of my hands.
I do have to say I did not find the piece light-hearted... self-loathing comes closer to the mark (though may be too strong). My final two cents on the issue unless the Author choose to engage me directly int he discussion is if your involved in any thing your not proud to talk about with your friends and co-workers you probably shouldn't be involved in it. That goes double for any paid gig you may have, if your ashamed of how you earn a living maybe just maybe its time to look for new work.
I see nothing shameful in being a gamer and while I hardly force the topic on my friends I don't hid my figures, books and projects from anyone either.
